More stuff
As promised, here's some more work done for my project. The first 2 were sketched out in pen on paper, and greyscaled later on in Photoshop. The last one is completely digital.
I'm also currently working on one of the keyscenes in my story, the moment the house is grabbed by the Giant. And yes, this time it's in color for a change, I'll hopefully be able to post it later on this

Character design | Orphans
These last couple of weeks I've been working hard on developing my Giant story further, amongst others I wanted to flesh out the cast of orphans that go giant hunting. I have some more, but these were the first ones I was reasonably happy with. More environment sketches, layouts and other stuff will follow soon!

Building designs
Finally got around putting this one online, as it's been on my hard drive for months. Done as part of my personal project revolving around a 30s New York. More stuff coming up!

Newsstand
Idea behind this image is that everything in this depressed world is affected; visualized here by the clouds above the Newsstand guy and his customer, but also in all the magazine covers.
Shine street
An image I've been working on for a while, but fortunately came together in the end. Depicted is the main character (the only happy guy), still trying to go by his normal shoeshine business as the world around him is getting more and more grim. I tried to give the depressed characters gradations in depression, visualized in normal clouds, rainclouds and thunderclouds. :)
That's it for now, back to work! -Edwin

Project 'Shine' - Story Development
Hi guys!
Above some story development work I did for (yet another) personal project which I dubbed 'Shine'.
I based my story on the hard times in the US during The Great Depression;
During the '30s, financial times were hard in the US, and people went bankrupt overnight on Black Tuesday. Not due to a collapsing stockmarket though, but by an all consuming depression cloud that hovered into town.....It's upto a simple shoeshine boy to put a smile on everyones faces once again....
Preeeeeetty awesome outline, riiiiight?
Right?
*sigh* I know, i know, I'm no writer, but I DO love to draw stories, so that's why I create short outlines like these to get me going on a project. From here, I can start thinking about characters, side characters, environments, etc. I've also started designing some of the sets already, which I hope to put up here soon aswel.
Above thumbnails were drawn directly in pen, with values added in photoshop. At this stage, it's all about getting my initial ideas onto paper as quickly as possible, and not get caught up in trying to make things look pretty. :)
For those interested, check out my Instagram Sketchbook to see some snapshots of the original pensketches in my sketchbook.
That's it again for today, more stuff coming soon!

Environment design - Workflow

Step 1 - Lineart |

Step 2 - Values & Lighting Design |

Step 3 - Color |
I've been doing alot of 2D background layouts for the Dutch 2D feature film 'Trippel Trappel' currently in development at Anikey Studios these last couple of months, which has brought my focus back to doing lineart environments, instead of the painted ones I usually post.
Therefore I did the above environment just for fun, and to give you a little bit of insight on how I currently work.
Especially going from greyscale to color is something I've finally figured out how to do, thanks to the wonderful workflow process posted on the blog of Armand Serrano. Check out his tutorial here.
It comes down to coloring in your greyscale drawing with your photoshop layer set to 'color', instead of multiply or overlay. Yup, it's that simple. :D

Hey guys,
Although it's been pretty quiet around here, that doesn't mean I haven't been upto anything!
When not at work, I'm currently working hard on my porfolio. I'll be posting some architecture here stuff soon, aswell as some environment work I've been doing.
In the meanwhile I thought I'd let you guys know that I have been posting some of my sketches and WIPs through my Instagram account, which you can check out at http://instagram.com/rhemrev , or just by clicking the picture above, thanks!

Dino Time!
Hey everyone!
I hope all of you had a wonderful christmas and a happy new year!
During my christmas vacation, I was browsing through some old artfolders on my computer, and came across some 50s computer designs I did over 2 years ago (they're included on the second sheet).
I decided to do some more doodling inspired by these designs, and see if I could come up with a fun storyline for a possible short animation. What I have came up with so far:
It revolves around a nerdish inventor guy, who has been tinkering with time itself. This all goes haywire when his elderly maid (don't call her that though!) uses the wrong cannister to clean the floor, resulting in a whole world of trouble; timetravelling dinosaurs, spray-on warp-holes, mobile phones (literally!) and more silly awesomeness!
Although it's unlikely any of the these ideas will ever see the light of day in the form of an animation short, I will be inlcuding these ideas in my next sketchbook, which I plan on publishing later this year. It'll be similar to my first sketchbook, which can still be purchased here :)
Anyway, thanks for stopping by, now go back to work and draw some of your own timetravelling dino's! :D

CTN & New characterwork
Hi guys!
I had a blast at CTN, and will defenitely be back next year! I got to meet some amazing and talented people, and had some wonderful respons to my work aswell.
Thank you to all who stopped by our booth, next time we'll actually have something to sell, promise! :)
Also, I want to thank CTN , and Tina Price in particular, for putting together such a wonderful event. CTN even arranged for us to visit Dreamworks and Disney, another highlight of our visit to the U.S.!
As it's impossible to go to CTN without leaving with a ton of inspiration, above there are some new drawings I did this past week.
- The first image is based on my experiences while waiting at the busstop in LA. Apparently all normal people drive cars, the rest goes by bus.
- Second image was based on some of the shabby places we ended up eating at in LA. Food was mostly good though! :)
- And the third image is a collage of pensketches I did of a bunch of witches. My favourite one is the one sipping tea. :)
That's it for now, more stuff coming soon!

Visual Development | project Giant
In between work and packing for my big trip to CTN, I managed to do 2 more visuals for my Giant project. I tried to tone down my use of color alot, resulting in the images above.
Only 1 more day to pack and get my porfolio ready, but of course I'll be back in 2 weeks. Or, if you have the chance, look me up at the CTN convention, I'll be there all 3 days (nov16-18) at booth T107. :)
Off to LA!
-Edwin
EDIT 09/10/2012 : I added 2 other (greyscaled) paintings, done a couple of months ago (I never got around posting them :S).

Character Sketches
And some more pensketches for some of the orphan kids running (and driving!) around in my story. Feedback much appreciated, thanx! -Ediwn
Project Giant, Trippel Trappel and more!
Busy as usual, but here's a quick update on things!
Trippel Trappel
Well, pre-production has finally begun on the Dutch Feature Animation movie 'Trippel Trappel' at the Anikey Studio! I'm currently having a blast doing lots of visual development work for this movie, and what's even cooler is that I'm able to combine it with my themepark work on the Adventure World Warsaw project. Pretty darn cool!
CTN
Another big thing coming up is the recruiting event CTN in Los Angeles this november, and guess who's finally going! I'll be attending this awesome animation event together with friend and collegue Wouter Tulp, can't wait to meet you all there! They even created a cool profile of me at the CTN website , check it out here !
Giant
Ah, and then there's some new stuff I've been doing for my personal project, which I simply dubbed 'Giant' for the time being. Above paintings were meant as quick explorations regarding style and mood, aprox. 2 to 4 hours each. Oh, and kudos to friend and skilled jetpack builder Jeffrey for coming up with the logo!
Rhemrev.com
I also updated my portfolio site rhemrev.com, be sure to check it out!
Sketchbook
Did you know I have an online sketchbook aswell? It's linked to my instagram account, and can be found here: http://www.gramfeed.com/rhemrev
More stuff coming up!

With all the good weather we've been having lately in The Hague, I have picked up Plein Air painting again. With my trusty macbook 15' and a bamboo tablet I sit on location (usually aprox 3 hours, as that is how long my battery lasts), and try to paint what is in front of me.
I can recommend it to everyone reading this, as it's great to observe color and light upclose, and try to capture it with a couple of brush strokes. As said, these paintings took a round 3 h ours on location, with usually alot of cleaning up afterwards at home, aprox 1 or 2 more hours.
I'm also still hard at work on a personal project called 'Giant', I'll be posting some stuff of that here soon aswell. For those who can't wait, you can already check out some of the sketches I've been posting on Instagram, direct link: http://www.gramfeed.com/rhemrev
Thanx for looking!

Giants - Part 2
As promised, some more art I've been working on. The ones in black and white are layout studies, the one in color is a more detailed pass on the abandoned house on a hill layout, where the girl awaits the return of The Giant. Story is still very much developing each day, will post more soon!
