CTN 2013

Hi all!
A bit later then planned, but I thought I'd do a quick post on how much I enjoyed CTN again this year!  It was our 2nd year coming out to LA to this wonderful animation convention, and once again we couldn't have had a better time!

We were able to meet up with alot of friends we made last year, and also made many new ones.  Thank you all who stopped by our booth, and picked up some of our free cards and drawings!

As a picture can speak a thousand words, above a collage of the event. Check out more CTN photos on my facebook, thanks!

Giant!!

Giant!

I thought I'd finally post this one. I started it many months ago, but never got around finishing it until today. I wanted to create a single image that would capture my entire 'Giant' project in one shot, and show how much potential the story would have for the big screen. Defenitely hope to one day flesh out this project in either a book or animation;  for now enjoy the image and keep your fingers crossed it'll one day become that big project :)

Style Exploration

Hi guys!
These last 2 months I haven't exactly been updating my blog alot, above the reason why! The images above were done as part of the online CGMA masterclass 'Environment sketching for production', as instructed by the wonderful Armand Serrano. This class basically took me and my fellow classmates through a fictive animation production, including coming up with your own script, creating mood & styleboards,  rough sketching, storybeats, switching styles (so much fun!), and much much more.

My story synopsis:

When the Mars Rover finally returns to earth, he brings with him a botanic plague that may cause the end of the world.

During a live television broadcast on CNN, NASA proudly shows samples of Marsian rock. The broadcast goes haywire when one of the presenters accidentally knocks over a glass of water, which is quickly absorbed by the  alien rock, causing it to explosively grow botanic tentacles.

In a matter of minutes the whole TV studio is overgrown with weird looking veins & plants, which is only the start of a turn of events that may lead to the end the world as we know it.

Yep, and that's why I never became a writer :)
Anyway, I had alot of fun, learned alot, and met some great people. I want to thank Armand for his amazing class, I could not have wished for a better instructor.

More stuff coming up!

Kickstarter Campaign Children's book!

Hi all!

One of my favourite projects I"ve been working on lately is above children'sbook, a project I'm doing with Adam Sidwell, a well known children's book writer & visual FX guru (Pacific Rim, King Kong, Pirates of the Carribean).

The book is called 'Fetch', and is about where dogs REALLY come from, fully illustrated by yours truly of course! :D

However, as it costs quite a bit of money to get the book printed, we started a kickstarter campaign! Click the above video for more info, and then please visit this link:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/adamsidwell/fetch-an-illustrated-book

Help us get together the funds needed to get this book on the shelves, you're already getting a free copy when funding us for a mere 19 dollars, so what are you waiting for! Go go go!

THANK YOU!

Can you imagine a book filled entirely with these type op drawings? It's going to be AWESOME!:D

More stuff

As promised, here's some more work done for my project. The first 2 were sketched out in pen on paper, and greyscaled later on in Photoshop. The last one is completely digital.

I'm also currently working on one of the keyscenes in my story, the moment the house is grabbed by the Giant. And yes, this time it's in color for a change,  I'll hopefully be able to post it later on this
week.

Character design | Orphans

These last couple of weeks I've been working hard on developing my Giant story further, amongst others I wanted to flesh out the cast of orphans that go giant hunting. I have some more, but these were the first ones I was reasonably happy with. More environment sketches, layouts and other stuff will follow soon!

Building designs

Finally got around putting this one online, as it's been on my hard drive for months. Done as part of my personal project revolving around a 30s New York. More stuff coming up!

Project Shine | Visual development

Visual development - Depressed Newsstand
Visual development - Shine street
Closeup

Closeup
Here's some more work done for my personal project 'Shine', some of you have already seen a glimpse of these images in my online sketchbook.

Newsstand
Idea behind this image is that everything in this depressed world is affected; visualized here by the clouds above the Newsstand guy and his customer, but also in all the magazine covers.

Shine street
An image I've been working on for a while, but fortunately came together in the end. Depicted is the main character (the only happy guy), still trying to go by his normal shoeshine business as the world around him is getting more and more grim. I tried to give the depressed characters gradations in depression, visualized in normal clouds, rainclouds and thunderclouds. :)

That's it for now, back to work! -Edwin

Project 'Shine' - Story Development

Hi guys!
Above some story development work I did for (yet another) personal project which I dubbed 'Shine'.

I based my story on the hard times in the US during The Great Depression;

During the '30s, financial times were hard in the US, and people went bankrupt overnight on Black Tuesday. Not due to a collapsing stockmarket though, but by an all consuming  depression cloud that hovered into town.....It's upto a simple shoeshine boy to put a smile on everyones faces once again....

Preeeeeetty awesome outline, riiiiight?

Right?

*sigh* I know, i know, I'm no writer, but I DO love to draw stories, so that's why I create short outlines like these to get me going on a project. From here, I can start thinking about characters, side characters, environments, etc. I've also started designing some of the sets already, which I hope to put up here soon aswel.

Above thumbnails were drawn directly in pen, with values added in photoshop. At this stage, it's all about getting my initial ideas onto paper as quickly as possible, and not get caught up in trying to make things look pretty. :)

For those interested, check out my Instagram Sketchbook to see some snapshots of the original pensketches in my sketchbook.

That's it again for today, more stuff coming soon!

Back to work,

Environment design - Workflow

Step 1 - Lineart
Step 2 - Values & Lighting Design
Step 3 - Color

Hi all,

I've been doing alot of 2D background layouts for the Dutch 2D feature film 'Trippel Trappel' currently in development at Anikey Studios these last couple of months, which has brought my focus back to doing lineart environments, instead of the painted ones I usually post.

Therefore I did the above environment just for fun, and to give you a little bit of insight on how I currently work.

Especially going from greyscale to color is something I've finally figured out how to do, thanks to the wonderful workflow process posted on the blog of Armand Serrano.  Check out his tutorial here.

It comes down to coloring in your greyscale drawing with your photoshop layer set to 'color', instead of multiply or overlay. Yup, it's that simple. :D

Back to work,
-Edwin

Project 'Shine' - Character Sketches

Although it's been pretty quiet around here, that doesn't mean I haven't been upto anything!

When not at work, I'm currently working hard on my porfolio. I'll be posting some architecture here stuff soon, aswell as some environment work I've been doing.

In the meanwhile I thought I'd let you guys know that I have been posting some of my sketches and WIPs through my Instagram account, which you can check out at http://instagram.com/rhemrev , or just by clicking the picture above, thanks!

Dino Time!

Hey everyone!
I hope all of you had a wonderful christmas and a happy new year!

During my christmas vacation, I was browsing through some old artfolders on my computer, and came across some 50s computer designs I did over 2 years ago (they're included on the second sheet).

I decided to do some more doodling inspired by these designs, and see if I could come up with a fun storyline for a possible short animation. What I have came up with so far:

It revolves around a nerdish inventor guy, who has been tinkering with time itself. This all goes haywire when his elderly maid (don't call her that though!) uses the wrong cannister to clean the floor, resulting in a whole world of trouble; timetravelling dinosaurs, spray-on warp-holes, mobile phones (literally!) and more silly awesomeness!

Although it's unlikely any of the these ideas will ever see the light of day in the form of an animation short, I will be inlcuding these ideas in my next sketchbook, which I plan on publishing later  this year.  It'll be similar to my first sketchbook, which can still be purchased here :)

Anyway, thanks for stopping by, now go back to work and draw some of your own timetravelling dino's! :D
